Lessons from 2 Coaches of the Year

In their first seasons running the #RaceAndSpace offense, both @BJKeener and @jtrey44 were named as 2022 Coaches of the Year! They’re both good friends and #SAVI coaches, so they kindly shared what helped lead their programs to VICTORIOUS seasons.

When you define you own victory, losing is impossible. That’s SAVI.

Coach Keener Lessons

Ruthless Simplicity. He simplified things offensively to play fast and with space. The actions they ran were quick. Coach Keener saw that simplicity does win!

Get the ball in the right players hands. He ran a few sets to get the right shots at the right times for his players. But, he knew what players he wanted to have the ball. Shot selection is the benchmark of an effective offense.

Shooting Wins. They shot A LOT! Especially 3s! (We call 7s in the #SAVI playbook). They shot the right kinds of 3s by the right people. He tried to spend 50% of their practice time on shooting. The game is about buckets! Practice most what you want to do best.

They practiced shooting a lot - and made 175 3’s over the season!! The grass grows where you water it!

Measurement is Magic. Using #SAVI wargames and the visible #WinnersBoard made things visible to both coaches and players. If you do it, measure it. When you measure it, you improve. 

Coach Munroe Lessons

Be adaptable. Build to your players strengths. He adapted and adjusted roles, as the year went on, and it changed the trajectory of his season.

Get more game like shots up in practice. It’s vital to success. Coach learned to focus on fewer restrictions, more actions, more movement, and more competition in practice.

Shooting seperates. Spend more time shooting.

A player led program is strong. Once he found leaders in the program who inspire, respect others, and set the example, he let them lead. Let your assistant coaches have a strong voice and speak freely. Open communication and an open mind allows for growth as a coach.
